Fall 2024 shoe trends are finally here—and as a style editor, I’m happy to report you’ll actually want to wear them this season (and far beyond it, for that matter). As late summer fades into autumn, you can expect to see new twists on familiar favorites like tall boots and ballet flats. Suede is the material of the season, even more than usual, with so many boots, loafers, clogs, and sneakers rendered in the soft, luxe leather.
Thankfully for our collective ankles, wearability is key this season: Kitten heels are trendier than sky-high stilettos, tons of flat styles are in, and lug-sole loafers will help you get around without slipping. Ready to make the most of a new season? These are the fall shoe trends Glamour editors are obsessed with—plus tips on how to style them in the real world.

1. Suede boots
Before you hit me with a “Suede for fall? Groundbreaking,” hear me out: The material is poised to have an even bigger year than usual. Why? It’s a matter of vibes—a relaxed, moneyed look is in for autumn, and few shoes project that sense of ease as chicly as suede boots. (It doesn’t hurt that labels like Chanel, Isabel Marant, and Ralph Lauren showed the accessories for fall.) Whether you go with a bootie, a knee-high boot, or something over-the-knee, you’ll be right on trend. Style your pair with earth-tone fall dresses or all-denim ensembles for extra style points.

2. Slim sneakers
Sleek retro sneakers—especially Adidas Sambas—officially took the crown from chunkier styles last year, and the slim, sporty silhouette is still holding strong in 2024. I’ve spotted endless pairs of Adidas, Pumas, and Nikes among the fashion crowd (including many fellow Condé Nast employees) in the past few weeks, so expect to see those brands and their ilk on the rise as autumn progresses. While neutrals are always safe bets, unexpected hues and patterns make even low-effort outfits—like a white T-shirt and straight-leg jeans—pop.

3. Stacked loafers
Oh, how times change. After a few years of being replaced by their slimmer cousins, platform and lug-sole loafers are back in the spotlight following appearances at Gucci and Victoria Beckham. Fashion girls are already sold; August’s Copenhagen Fashion Week was awash in ’90s-influenced styles featuring stacked soles and horsebit hardware. While thinner soles will never go out of style, you’ll want a heavy-duty pair for fall; these picks will pair well with wide-leg jeans, oversized suits, and minidresses with tights.

4. Moto boots
Tall boots are having a banner year; call it the Cowboy Carter effect. While there’s been a wave of interest in cowboy boots, I expect simpler, Western-tinged styles to take the top spot when autumn rolls around. Just ask Zendaya: The A-lister was just spotted wearing Frye’s iconic Campus boots, which exemplify the tall, structured silhouette I’m excited to try. And don’t be shy about buckles, straps, and moto details; a little hardware goes a long way, especially paired with feminine pieces like bubble dresses and miniskirts.

5. Shoes as jewelry
Ring sandals and bracelet flats blur the line between footwear and jewelry, making simple footwear feel truly special. (Plus, you don’t need to worry about choosing separate toe rings or anklets—it’s all one piece.) These pieces have slowly taken over my Instagram feed, and Glamour readers have been obsessed with them all season. Get in on the look with these sandals and slip-ons; those Tory Burch mules, in particular, are favorites of mine and my fellow style editors’. Relaxed elegance doesn’t get much easier.

6. Academic flats
The fashion crowd is currently obsessed with ballet flats, the schoolgirl staples that somehow go with everything. There are several schools of thought here; some people prefer classic flats, some opt for Mary Janes, and others are going for fall’s T-bar trend, which Ferragamo and Dries Van Noten popularized. More important than the silhouette is the styling, which should lean coquettish. Think quarter-length socks, a crewneck cardigan, and capri pants when you’re headed to a nice brunch; tee up a pleated skirt, a blazer, and colored tights to put an of-the-moment spin on a school uniform.

7. Boat shoes
The ultrapreppy footwear you owned (or coveted) in high school is back in a big way. As with many things these days, it all comes back to Miu Miu; the brand showed boat shoes on its spring-summer 2024 runway, and the rest of the fashion world is just beginning to catch up. I’ve noticed a huge uptick in boat shoes and camp moccasins in New York and on TikTok, and I spotted multiple pairs of Timberland’s lug-sole shoes during a recent trip to Paris. All signs point to a grand comeback tour, so get ahead of the curve with classic iterations from Sperry and Sebago or Miu Miu lookalikes from Steve Madden. Oh, and while they’re not quite the same, moccasins are also on the rise; Clarks offers flats that fit the vibe.

8. Kitten heels
Fall wedding season is starting to heat up as temperatures plummet—but I’m happy to report that this season’s event-ready footwear is especially foot-friendly. After walking the runway at Prada and Tory Burch, ladylike kitten heels have made their way into the mainstream at the perfect intersection between chic and practical. Whether your slinky sweaterdress or tailored suit calls for pumps, slingbacks, or mules, this edit (in fall’s hottest colors) has you covered.

9. Boho clogs
Boho is back—and so are the look’s go-to shoes, including wedges and (most excitingly) clogs. Channel Chloé’s popular fall runway show with studded mules from Tory Burch and The Drop, dip a toe into autumn’s fuzzy shoe trend with Birkenstock, or boost your height and your comfort with Ugg’s platform clogs. They’ll all look great with faded denim and flowy maxiskirts; go sockless for dressier events and add some calf socks on your days off.
